In this episode of Unsaid with Catie Whiting, LCSW, PMH-C, we’re joined by Madison Templeton, RD, a registered dietitian specializing in women’s health, fertility, and PCOS. Madison helps us unpack what it really means to manage Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), support fertility, and prepare the body for pregnancy through nutrition, lifestyle, and education. Together, we explore the complexities of PCOS including its symptoms, common misconceptions around treatment, and the emotional toll it can take on women. Madison emphasizes the importance of individualized treatment plans, comprehensive assessments, and the role of nutrition, gut health, minerals, and lifestyle changes in managing PCOS. We also dive into: The impact of birth control on hormones (and why it doesn’t “regulate” them) The importance of egg quality, mineral balance, and environmental toxins Gut health and insulin resistance in PCOS management How protein, sleep, and stress reduction support hormonal balance Why emotional well-being matters when navigating fertility and PCOS The importance of advocating for yourself and exploring options beyond conventional medicine At Madison Templeton Nutrition, she takes “a holistic approach to balancing your hormones, healing your cycle, and helping you get pregnant.” Through 1:1 work and accessible resources, Madison empowers women to move past confusion and find clarity in their fertility journey. ✨ Key Takeaways: PCOS is more than a hormonal condition—it affects the whole body. Nutrition and lifestyle shifts (protein, minerals, gut health, sleep) are essential. Mental health and self-advocacy are just as important as physical care. 💬 Sound Bites from the Episode: “Every woman with PCOS is different.” “Your period is a sign of health.” “You don’t have to fit in a box.” 🌿 Learn more about Madison’s work: www.madisontempletonnutrition.com 📲 Follow Madison on Instagram: @madison.templeton.nutrition 🎧 Explore more episodes with Catie: www.catiewhiting.com 👉 Follow Unsaid on Instagram & Facebook for new episodes and behind-the-scenes conversations, and visit www.catiewhiting.com to learn more. #UnsaidPodcast #PCOSAwareness #MadisonTempletonNutrition #FertilityJourney #HormoneHealth #GutHealth #WomensHealthPodcast #PregnancyPrep #IVFSupport #HolisticNutrition

Dec 10, 202400:56:55

Welcome back to Unsaid with Catie Whiting, LCSW, PMH-C! In this third episode of our mini-series, we continue exploring the question, “What is happening to my body?” by offering a fresh, empowering perspective on health and wellness during the transition to midlife. Catie is joined by the inspiring Megan Hanewald, a professional rowing and triathlon coach, fitness expert, and owner of Thrive Through Midlife. Together, they dive deep into the physical, mental, and emotional changes women experience during perimenopause and beyond, shedding light on the often misunderstood symptoms of this natural phase of life. Megan opens up about her own shocking journey through perimenopause—how the symptoms took her by surprise and how this personal experience has led her to implement a more holistic approach to health in her practice. As they discuss the lack of adequate conversation around perimenopause in the mainstream, Megan and Catie emphasize how many women feel alone and unsupported in navigating this stage of life. The reality is, perimenopause is rarely discussed in a meaningful way, and symptoms are often misunderstood or dismissed, leaving many women feeling isolated or unsure of where to turn for help. In this candid conversation, Megan calls out the limitations of traditional gynecological care, highlighting the problem with the focus on “bikini medicine”—the idea that OB-GYNs only discuss the parts of your body that are covered by a bikini. But what about everything else? What about the emotional, mental, and physical challenges that go beyond reproductive health? Megan and Catie challenge the narrow scope of this approach and discuss the importance of treating the whole person, not just isolated parts. This episode is about breaking the silence, supporting women in understanding their bodies, and empowering them to make informed decisions about their health. Whether you're in perimenopause, preparing for it, or simply curious about what changes come with midlife, this conversation is for you. 2. Understanding Mom-xiety with Catie Whiting, Perinatal Mental Health Specialist

Nov 15, 202200:40:03

Welcome back to The Motherhood Dilemma! In this episode, your co-hosted team, Catie and Andrea, dive into Anxiety during motherhood. Through personal stories and professional expertise, Perinatal Mental Health specialist Catie Whiting defines and explains “Mom-xiety”. This insight provides listeners with information to understand anxiety, how it uniquely affects mothers, how it manifests in their lives, and ways they can conquer it. So join your hosts, Catie and Andrea, as they provide a fresh perspective and tools to identify and "lean in" to Mom-xiety. Tools to overcoming "Mom-xiety": Rational vs Irrational This tool should be done every day over at least 1-2 weeks. As you go through your day, write down the “fears” or “anxieties” that pop into your head and cause you distress. At the end of the day, take a look at what thoughts you have written down. Are they rational... or irrational? Meaning: Are you worried about a tornado coming when you see a dark cloud (irrational), versus, there’s a tornado warning on the radio (rational). Once you rate rational versus irrational, you will see that many of the anxious thoughts that pop into your head are irrational. This activity allows your brain to see that it holds multiple anxious thoughts that are just taking up space, and do not provide any safety for you. Put it in a Box This tool is one of Catie's favorites and is great for worries (that you have no control over) that seem to take up space in your brain. The idea is to "write it down". When you take a pen and paper and write down the thoughts, it pulls them from the emotional side of the brain to the logical side, allowing for a calmer discharge. In other words: Place the worry on a sheet of paper, fold it up, and put it in the box (or throw it in the trash). This allows your brain to see that you are aware of the worry, you accept the worry, but you have no room to hold it and you’re placing it in the box on the shelf. Movement This last tool is talked about constantly. “Go exercise and you’ll feel better“, “go for a run and you’ll feel better“. The idea is you must allow your body to have some kind of physical discharge to release anxious manifestations. This can be jumping on the bed for five minutes, running around the house yelling, punching a pillow, etc... The idea is not to do a full workout, although that is welcome. The idea is to discharge physical tension through the body, showing your brain that you have multiple ways for it to feel better.
